Degrees and Certifications:
Although I grew up in the Chicago, Illinois, I’ve spent most of my adult life out here on the west coast. After graduating from the University of Illinois, I moved out west to attend law school at the University of Oregon. When I completed my studies, I came to the Bay area to work and to live near my aunt and uncle in Sunnyvale. I worked for many years in one of my areas of interest, bicycling, before making a career change and returning to school. I participated in an internship program at Santa Clara University and received my teaching credential while I taught kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grade students here at Portal. That was over 20 years ago! I’ve been at Portal since I began teaching- 6 years in primary, 9 years in our Rockhopper 4-5 village, and now my sixth year as part of the 2/3 team. I have been married to a wonderful woman, Mika, for the last 11 years, and we have two children: my son Soichiro (8) and my daughter Momoka (6). We also have the sweetest dog ever- our 8 month old adopted puppy named Pepperoni!
In my free time I love to spend time with my wife, Mika, and our two very active kids! Some of my favorite things to do include running, riding my bicycle and motorcycle, playing guitar, singing in my folk choir at church, visiting relatives in Japan, and following my number one team and sport- the San Francisco Giants baseball club. I try to bring a little laughter and joy to whatever I do, and take great pleasure in spending my time learning and discovering new things with everyone I meet.
