John Muir teaches literacy using Lucy Calkins' Units of Study workshop model. The Reading and Writing Workshop Model is a structured time for the teaching and learning of literacy instruction. Its main focus is to differentiate instruction in order to accommodate learning needs of all students while fostering a love of reading and writing in a literacy- rich environment.
Our goal is to ensure that ALL students are reading at grade level by the end of third grade. We formally assess students three times each year to monitor their progress towards grade level literacy benchmarks and ensure they have access to a lot of books at their reading level. We strategically use Tier 2 interventions, such as the Leveled Literacy Intervention (LLI) program, for small groups of students who need extra instruction and practice to help them reach our literacy goal.
