Ms. Lori Cunningham

Lori is a mom, community volunteer, and public education advocate.  She has deep roots in the community, growing up in Sunnyvale and attending West Valley Elementary, Cupertino Jr. High, and Homestead High.  It was in the District science classrooms of her childhood that Lori found her passion.  She holds a Bachelors in Biology at Scripps College and a Master of Physical Therapy from Samuel Merritt University and enjoyed her career as a practitioner, healthcare administrator, and later director, and clinical educator. Prior to joining the Board, Lori began volunteering when her oldest child entered Kindergarten in 2010, beginning in her children’s classrooms as a learning center and Project Cornerstone volunteer, noon-duty supervisor, and later on the PTO Board of Directors and as School Site Council Chair at Montclaire.  She has served extensively with Safe Routes to School advocacy efforts in Los Altos, Sunnyvale, and Cupertino, and in CUSD’s Budget, District, Parent, and English Language Advisory Committees.  She also serves on the FUHSD Citizens’ Oversight Committee.  She was the 2017 recipient of the Cupertino Educational Endowment Foundation’s Sandy Liu Community Service Leadership Award for her commitment and service to the children of CUSD. Lori completed the Masters in Governance program with the California School Boards Association in the 2019-2020 school year.  She brings over 20 years of leadership experience, more than a decade of service in CUSD as a volunteer and parent leader, and deep knowledge of education funding policy to the Board.  She is an avid scuba diver, paddleboarder, and skier, and is her best self when she’s connected to the water, whatever state it happens to be in.

Ms. Sylvia Leong

Sylvia Leong was appointed to the Board in 2019 and elected to her second term in 2020. Sylvia has been working in education and with students for over 20 years.  Professionally, her career has predominantly been in higher ed administration, she has been in college admissions at USC, CMU, and UC Berkeley, however, she has also been in the classroom as a substitute teacher in CUSD and an English teacher in China. She has been an active parent leader in CUSD and FUHSD for over a decade. Over the years she has served on various parent organizations at Meyerholz, Miller, and Lynbrook, including PTA Safe Routes, Graduation Chair, CLIPCO President, Lynbrook Athletics, and club advisor. Sylvia also serves on the advisory board of International China Concern, a non-profit organization serving vulnerable children in China. Sylvia received her BA in Mass Communications from UC Berkeley, her Masters in Governance from the California School Boards Association, and is an Asian Pacific American Leadership Institute (APALI) Fellow. Sylvia is passionate about holistic education that balances academics with social-emotional health to best equip our students for future success and to be an inclusive voice for our community.

Mr. Jerry Liu

Jerry began his involvement with CUSD as a kindergarten classroom volunteer.  Over the years, he has served on various parent organizations at Lincoln Elementary and Kennedy Middle, including terms as School Site Council Chair and PTA President.  Prior to joining the CUSD Board, he also served on the CUSD’s District Advisory Committee, Parent Advisory Committee, Parcel Tax Oversight Committee, and the Superintendent Search Advisory Committee in 2017.  In his civic life, he served on the Cupertino Planning Commission and two terms as Chair of the Cupertino Library Commission.  He was also the former president of the Cupertino Library Foundation which raises funds to support student enrichment programs.   He received the CREST award for his community volunteer work from the City of Cupertino in 2016.  Professionally, he is a research lab director managing artificial intelligence research at HP Labs and holds over 25 granted patents.  He received his Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees in Electrical Engineering from Cornell University.

Mr. Satheesh Madhathil

Satheesh started in CUSD as a kindergarten classroom volunteer at Faria Elementary, later held several leadership roles as a member of the Faria PTA Board and School Site Council including PTA President and SSC Chair.  He continued to be actively involved in leadership at Kennedy Middle School PTA and Monta Vista High School PTSA as their Finance Secretary, Executive Vice-President, and President.  He served over six years on the Cupertino Fremont Sunnyvale PTA Council Board as their Vice President of Leadership and Executive Vice President, and two years as a member of the Sixth District PTA Executive Board.

In recognition of his contributions towards the welfare of children and youth in the school and community, Satheesh is a recipient of the PTA Honorary Service Award (HSA) and PTA Golden Oak Service Award.  Additionally, he heads the Cupertino Region for American Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO), a non-profit organization to promote quality youth soccer.

Professionally, Satheesh has been part of high tech companies in the Bay Area as an engineering leader for the past two decades.

Mrs. Phyllis Vogel

Phyllis began her career as a teacher in the Los Gatos Union School District.  She began teaching in the Cupertino Union School District in 1963 and has spent the rest of her career here.  Other positions she has held in CUSD include Teacher on Special Assignment, Coordinator in Instruction, Principal of both John Muir School and Murdock Portal School, and Assistant Superintendent of Instructional Services.  Career highlights include teaching in the innovative Apple Classrooms of Tomorrow and opening Murdock-Portal as an alternative school.  With over 50 years in CUSD in a variety of roles, Phyllis brings a wealth of experience to the Board.  Phyllis received her Bachelor's in Education from San Jose State University and her Master's in Educational Administration from Santa Clara University.
