Emergency Procedures

  • In the event of a fire, the staff and students at John Muir will:
    Evacuate the classroom with emergency backpacks to the line up area on the field
    Identify students that are missing and/or injured
    Set up a communication command center
    Activate first aid, search and rescue, etc., as needed
    Organize for the care and/or release of students if needed

    In the event of an earthquake, the staff and students at John Muir will:
    Duck, cover, and hold
    Evacuate the classroom with emergency backpacks to the line up area on the field
    Identify students that are missing and/or injured
    Set up a communication command center
    Activate first aid, search and rescue, etc., as needed
    Organize for the care and/or release of students if needed

    In the event of an intruder on campus, the staff and students at John Muir will:
    Activate the Run, Hide, Defend procedures
    Close and lock all doors, windows, and blinds
    Build barriers in classrooms or flee to a predetermined offsite location
    Stay behind barriers until police come to escort classes to student holding area
    Organize for the care and/or release of students as needed

    In the event of an environmental hazard, the staff and students at John Muir will:
    Close blinds, lock doors, and shelter in place
    School activities will continue inside
    Parents may be required to pick-up students at the classroom 

    If there is an emergency during school hours that creates a situation in which the school is no longer safe, you will be notified by one or more of the following ways:
    Local radio station announcements (such as KCBS-AM 740, KGO-AM 810, and KLIV-AM 1590)
    Check the school/district website and local television news
    An automated phone call or email from the school or district office

    Once you have been notified that the facility is closed AND it is safe for you to travel to the facility, calmly go to the school. You must park your car in the surrounding neighborhood; all parking lots and entrances to the school will be closed. You will be given directions to our student release area where children will only be released to parents and people listed on the child’s Disaster ID. Be prepared to show identification.
